Happy Birthday Kingsway Villagers

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 by Clive

2 years ago today I officially launched this site with my Welcome To Kingsway message.

Since then we have grown to include 192 Posts and those posts have generated 1,075 (approved) comments

We have also initiated our own Residents Association and become actively involved in the development of the Village, local community Policing and many other local activities.

Right now we have 238 registered contributors and users and a LOT more regular readers (who don’t have to register, but visit the site on a regular basis)… (Note: I remove “false users / blog spammers” every day, so the 238 registered members are genuine)!

In July we attracted around 122,000 hits (4,062 per day).

Of the 192 Posts, 86 were written by me and 106 posts have been written and submitted by YOU.

So – as I originally intended – this really is Our Community Website… not mine.

I want to say a great big THANK YOU to all those of you who have contributed to help make the site a (huge) success :D

In a recent post I mentioned the up-coming anniversary and my intention to make some changes / add some new facilities.
My recent workload, the kids summer holidays and other things have – as I anticipated – conspired to stop me from achieving this before today, but I will be working on it very shortly.

Kingsway Villagers Update

Saturday, July 4th, 2009 by Clive

Hi Neighbours,

The website is coming up for it’s 2nd anniversary on 12th August 2009.

I have some interesting information to post about the history of the site, and I’m hoping to implement a few changes in time for that date (or – more likely – soon afterwards – lol).

My initial ideas include:

A static home page with a welcome message, info’ about navigating the site, the site history, user contributions, my other activities, recent posts, etc.
(Hopefully, use of a static home page will speed up the site loading time).

Extended user profiles – allowing users to enter more personal info’ (optional) and to see each others data (obviously email addresses etc would remain confidential).

A chat room facility to allow users to interact on the site.

A “mini-forum” (I’m not certain yet about the need for this, or the likely effect on the performance of the site… which already includes a lot more facilities than the average blog and can therefore be a little slow at times)!

The purpose of this post is to invite you all to comment on my proposals and to suggest ideas about other things you’d like to see included…

After all, it’s not my site… It’s ours!

Internet Connection

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 by Clive

Hi Folks,

At the start of last week I had a problem with my Sky internet connection.
Sky said my router firmware needed upgrading and took several days to deliver a new disk. When it arrived I rang them for installation instructions and was informed that the disk was the wrong one  so they sent me a new router, which arrived today (yippee)!

I’ve been using Sky Broadband since moving here (2.3 years ago) and have had an excellent service; in fact I can only remember 2 problems. One was on a Sunday night / Monday morning when the network was “down for maintenance” from 2am to 6am (or something like that) which probably didn’t affect many other people (as I recall I was busy that weekend – lol)!
The other problem was apparently a BT problem, which lasted for a few hours.

Sky use a BT exchange for the Hardwicke area (which is why their “unlimited access” broadband service isn’t available in this area). When I first learned of this (back in 2006), I was worried that an access limit might affect me. Sky did say that they would be installing their own exchange within 12 months, after which the unlimited access service would be available, but – from what they recently told me – I gather they still use BT.
With all that said I’ve been very impressed by their broadband facility thus far and have had no problems whatsoever with the access limit!

As an ex Blueyonder customer, I was mortified to hear that they had no intention of servicing Kingsway (“now or in the future” according to Blueyonder customer services); now I’m no longer bothered.

From my web stat’s I can see that there are several other broadband sevices used locally…
How do they compare with Sky?
Also other Sky users, how have you found the service?

My Son At Twickenham

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 by Clive

My eldest son Michael Barton is destined to play rugby at Twickenham on April 1st, in the final round of the Daily Mail RBS U18 Vase – Under 18 Cup final – St Peter’s, Gloucester v Truro College

michael bartonMichael (17) is currently attending St. Peters 6th form college studying Sports. He’s a tremendously keen and successful sportsman, having played inline (street) hockey at a very high level since age 7, he’s also had great success with football, having played for Quedgeley, Harwicke, Elmscroft/Longlevens and Gloucester City and District, and is – of course – a very keen rugby player having also played for Lydney – under 19′s and Widden under 17′s.

He’s also been taller than me since he was 13 when he passed the 6 foot mark…

St Peter’s Sixth Form College have played an influential role in helping nurture the talents of Gloucester and England stars Adam Eustace, Ryan Lamb, Marcel Garvey, Brad Davies and Jack Adams.

Read more here.

So I’ll be off to Twickenham to watch the match on April 1st…

Good Luck St. Peters :)

Website Issues

Friday, January 23rd, 2009 by Clive

An ancillary piece of software which I use to manage our article submissions was updated late in December.
Yesterday I discovered a bug with the upgrade which may have caused us to lose articles submitted since January 1st :(

I saw a submission from Baz_k dated January 1st – wishing everybody a happy new year… Sadly I was unable to retrieve it (sorry Baz… but it’s old news now anyway – lol)!
If anybody else submitted an article which got lost, I apologise, please resubmit.

The same problem also caused a link on the article submissions page to become temporarily broken… Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

And whilst I’m on the subject of this site; if anybody has any ideas for things/facilities/subjects which you would like to see included, please let me know… (I have made the same request in the past, but I like to take the opportunity to mention it from time-to-time, to save new members from having to read the entire site) :)

Car Crash – A Narrow Escape

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 by Clive

Last Tuesday (22nd September, shortly after 2:15pm)  I had a call from Angelina - obviously very distraught - she said “I’ve crashed the car, I’ve turned it over on Naas Lane”!

Conscious of the fact that I could easily become the 2nd casualty of the day if I overdid it, I had to swallow my impatience and so – driving as quickly as possible without panicking – I shot off down Naas Lane to find her.

When I reached the end of Naas Lane without site of anything untowards I turned left down Haresfield Lane, my progress was hampered by a couple of cars ahead of me until a Police car – sirens blaring – overtook us.

Not being in the mood to hang around I pulled out and followed the Police and we travelled along the lane until we came across this (YIKES):

Car CrashCar Crash

Apparently, as Ang’ rounded the bend, she lost her steering & the car lurched violently to the right. She tried to correct it, realised the steering wasn’t reacting as normal, so held on for grim death as the car swerved into the verge, climbed the bank, span over and crashed down onto the road & slid 30-50 yards until it came to a stop!

Ang’ says the stereo was still running so she realised that the electrics were still working, wound down the window, undid her seat belt (she was upside down at the time) and crawled out of the car. Then she sat on the verge, pulled out her ‘phone to call the Police and burst into tears

What happened next was quite surreal! A car came down the lane driven by a woman who pulled up, wound down her window and shouted to Ang’ that she had a meeting to get to and needed to get past 8O

Fortunately a guy coming in the opposite direction jumped out and called the Police and Ambulance; then they watched in amazement as the woman climbed the opposite grass bank to get around the car and sped off down the lane!

More good fortune came in the shape of an off-duty Paramedic who looked after Ang’ until the Ambulance arrived (which took way over 45 minutes) to take her to hospital.

The Police in attendance were extremely efficient and helpful and – although they will not be investigating the cause (no 3rd party involvement, damage or injury) – the Officer I spoke to said that it looked as it the driver-side front tyre may have blown and that – at the 40MPH which Ang’ said she was travelling – it’s easily possible for a car to flip, especially given the nature of the grass verge (steeply sloped up to around 4 feet) which she mounted.

Thankfully she had no broken bones (miraculous when you see the car), just lots of bumps, bruises and cuts and a week off of work to recover from the pain and the shock (which really kicked in after a day or two, particularly when we revisited the crash site)!

Car Crash

Ang’ was more distressed by the fact that she’s only had the car (an immaculate – and very sturdy – Renault Megane) for a few months and she really liked it :(
Now we just have to wait for the insurance assessment (due today) and the valuation (no doubt less than she paid for it) and – thankfully – she’s back at work tomorrow.

Huge THANK YOU’s go out to the guy who called the Police (and took care of the impatient lunatic), the off-duty Paramedic (who was wonderful), the Police, the Ambulance crew (Adam and his partner – very nice guys), the staff at Gloucester Royal’s A&E department and whichever Guardian Angel decided that Angelina should live through such a harrowing experience.

I’ve added a gallery containing all of the pictures of the car crash.
