Last night on my way home through the underpass from Tesco’s, I spotted a group of youths setting off fireworks on the embankment. This was only a couple of metres from the A38 and not far from peoples houses. The group did not look old enough to buy fireworks from any store (legally anyway), so I can only imagine where they obtained them.
Any parent would be horrified to find that their son or daughter had been injured by a rogue firework. This is the time of year to remind all youngsters whatever their age of the firework code and the dangers of letting them off so close to people and traffic.
I also think that the shops need to be reminded of the age limits on buying fireworks by local Police.
I’m not a scrooge, and I like many others enjoy fireworks at this time of year and can even tolerate them going off most evenings while people are enjoying themselves. I do however believe that parents have a responsibility to themselves and their children to make sure that they understand the dangers.
I am equally worried about this happening this weekend with youngsters out Trick or Treating, as that is a headline I don’t want to see in the local Press.
