Fooling With Fireworks

Friday, October 31st, 2008 by Paul

Last night on my way home through the underpass from Tesco’s, I spotted a group of youths setting off fireworks on the embankment. This was only a couple of metres from the A38 and not far from peoples houses. The group did not look old enough to buy fireworks from any store (legally anyway), so I can only imagine where they obtained them.

Any parent would be horrified to find that their son or daughter had been injured by a rogue firework. This is the time of year to remind all youngsters whatever their age of the firework code and the dangers of letting them off so close to people and traffic.
I also think that the shops need to be reminded of the age limits on buying fireworks by local Police.

I’m not a scrooge, and I like many others enjoy fireworks at this time of year and can even tolerate them going off most evenings while people are enjoying themselves. I do however believe that parents have a responsibility to themselves and their children to make sure that they understand the dangers.

I am equally worried about this happening this weekend with youngsters out Trick or Treating, as that is a headline I don’t want to see in the local Press.

Keeping up Appearances

Sunday, October 26th, 2008 by MissC

Hi,

I know there has been some debate on here about trolleys, things left at the park etc…

This is our Community, we live here and it’s up to to keep it the way we like it.

The other day I noticed next to our house that someone had left a smashed bottle there. I said to my other half that we should clean it up. Why? Because our children play out there, it is next to our house and one which is currently empty, and I care about how my area looks.

If we all walk outside our house and possibly notice a little bit of rubbish – pick it up; it will make Kingsway look clean and tidy and yes – maybe it may happen again – but at least there won’t be a mound of it.

I was walking down a side road last week and I noticed cardboard, bottles, writing on lampposts, writing on road signs etc… If the people who lived there washed it off – may take oh, 5 minutes but it will make the area look much less run down which is what it looks like down that side alley at the moment!

I do like living here, mainly as I live in a quiet part, however it is worrying how many trolleys, rubbish etc we do see…

We all need to take note and care for our Community.

Access & Amenities

Saturday, October 11th, 2008 by robuk

My wife and I have lived in Kingsway for over a year now and wanted to comment on the two biggest frustrations that appear to effect most of the village.

1. There are zero amenities in the way of shops/health facilities as promised by the various developers. I can not believe that in an area as vast as Kingsway we still have one shop to go to for our groceries, which the authorites have decided is enough and just plan to increase the size of Tesco’s.
What happened to choice?

2. Access to the above store…
The easiest and shortest route is a bus road only, which is madness for a village that wants to reduce car journeys!
My wife and I have to make regular large shopping journeys that require a car and have to drive 3 miles to a store 400 yards away.

The reason is to reduce traffic… WHAT?
The same cars have to populate the extra journey to get to the same roundabout that they don’t want us to use.

I for one use the bus road when the bollard is out of use and will continue to do so until common sense prevails. The Government want to start charging car journeys by the mile and Kingsway’s answer is to stop local traffic using an access road perfect for the journey… Utter madness!

At least until local amenities are provided please let residents use the sensible route to the shops; with the amount of people driving the extra distance I dread to think of the carbon footprint.

Trolleys and Recyling Bins

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 by RW10

Hi

Just a couple of points I was hoping someone could raise as I’m not sure what else to about it.

1. The Tesco trolleys that seem to setting up home across Kingsway, particularly in Leeming Walk; I have phoned the lost trolley hotline number quoted on the trolleys (puts you through to Tesco’s customer service centre) 4 times now but the number of trolleys just keeps on going up!
Surely Tesco should be able to send someone for a regular walk round Kingsway to pick up their property before we get more like the smashed up one in the park a while back?
Perhaps with all the work that is going to be going on there soon they could look at putting barriers in to prevent trolleys being "borrowed".

2. Green Recycling boxes: We only got our box because I phoned the Council and asked for one.
Apparently when Wimpey requested them last year they were out of stock and the matter then seemed to be forgotten about. I’m sure this must mean that there are other houses without them – not least because when I went out to put mine away after the bin men had been on Friday, I discovered it was gone! Obviously put back somewhere else by the bin men or picked up by someone else who thought it was theirs.
The Council needs to cut rubbish going to land fill. Is there some environmentally friendly way they can remind residents moving in to the new houses that they can ring up and request their free bin? Reluctant to suggest a flyer through the doors but it may be worth while to encourage more use of the recycling boxes.

The Big Dark/Park

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 by Baz_k

My kids, wife and I went to the big park this evening to give the kids some fresh air before bed time.
When we got there the park was quite busy with older children/teenagers.

I thought this was a very good thing as they were all not dismantling the place, shooting up, breaking bottles etc but just having "their" time in the park, so I thought it was worth giving them some positive press!

The other thing that occurred to me was that a lot of the lads were playing football and, with the nights getting darker, the street lighting isn’t really good enough for them to keep playing for long. Both my wife and I thought we could probably get some local floodlights to light the pitch, facing away from the houses so they don’t affect the residents, but provide some light to play by.

Lost Your Kitten?

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 by Clive

The following message was passed on to me by the QUVL:

I have found a lost kitten in Kingsway.

He is approx 4 months old and not very street-wise – he was nearly killed by a car and has been wandering lost for a couple of days before I took him in and bathed and fed him on Saturday night… He is safe.

If his owner is looking for him then they will be able to provide a description so I can be sure that they are really his owner and have a genuine interest in taking care of him.

I can be contacted on 07812 030542.

I wonder if you could let all the developers sites know by forwarding this email on please, in case someone is looking for him.

Thanks,
Monica.
