Thatcham Avenue Speed Limit
Monday, April 4th, 2016Several people have asked about the changes to speed limit signs on Thatcham Avenue in recent months, including yellowhouse who said (HERE): “Is it my imagination, or did there used to be 20MPH speed limit signs along Thatcham Ave, Brize Ave, etc? I can’t see them any more!”
He’s right. There were 20MPH speed limit signs along Thatcham Avenue, which have been removed in recent months. The reasons for this are that prior to adoption the land was owned by the developers (QUVL). They erected the 20MPH to "limit speed and the potential for interaction between residents and construction traffic when both were operating in the same space, ie: during construction and pre-adoption."
Since the road was adopted the legal (enforceable) speed limit is 30MPH and police have been unable to prosecute (for speeding) due to contradictory speed limit signs!
So, during a meeting of the "QUVL/Kingsway Liaison Group" in July last year, it was agreed that: "This requirement has now ceased in adopted areas but 20MPH signs are still in place on Thatcham Ave. The ’20 is plenty’ signs are triangular advisory signs and therefore not in dispute and are not an issue in the Police’s inability to prosecute."
So they agreed to remove the ("official") 20MPH signs, keeping the 30MPH signs and the “advisory 20MPH signs, and did so between July and October last year.
Note: Since then there have been some Local Police Speed Checks and there will most likely be more in the near future.
