A Fair Day Out

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

The weather was dry but chilly when we braved the cold to take Phoenix to the free Victorian Fair on Kingsway today.

Kingsway Village Fair

A selection of traditional fairground rides included a magnificent helter skelter and roundabout. Sideshow stalls included a ring toss and free food was available in the shape of candy floss and roast chestnuts. Phoenix hardly got off of the free train.

Fairground Rides

The field was packed with excited kids and overwrought parents and the local community police were circulating and chatting with everybody - as were we.

Kingsway Community Policing

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

Noting the number of posts which deal with crime and anti-social behaviour in the area, I was prompted to look into Gloucestershire Constabularies Community Policing policy and neighbourhood policing scheme for Kingsway Village (link removed as the page no longer exists… read my comment below).

Kingsway falls into the Quedgeley, Hardwicke, Elmore and Longney community for these matters and a look at their website (linked above) reveals that their priorities are:

1. To combat anti-social behaviour at Kingsway through enforcement, anti-social behaviour orders, acceptable behaviour contracts and community engagement with partners and residents to find long-term solutions.

2. To prevent and detect offences of criminal damage at Kingsway through high profile patrol, target hardening, education work with local schools and youth clubs.

There’s a lot of very useful, detailed information available on the site and they actively and enthusiastically invite local residents to “have a say and participate in the way your area is policed” with comments like “Come on residents of Quedgeley and Hardwicke, what are your priorities and concerns?”

Halloween 2007 and little monsters were out in force as trick or treat fever hit Kingsway and village residents marched their ghouls and gremlins around on a mission to fill their bags with goodies.
Our children Phoenix and Cheyenne (see pics) joined in the fun.

Kingsway Villagers Halloween

Cheyenne went off with a group of friends to terrorise villagers far and wide, whilst Phoenix, Richard, David, Mummy and I, set off scare up some candy in the immediate area.

Whist (understandably) many knocks went unanswered, we were more than impressed by the number of houses decorated with pumpkins, skulls, ghosties and skeletons and I managed to snap a few as we went by.

Kingsway Village Halloween

We travelled up and down Thatcham avenue, Kinloss Drive and several other roads in the immediate area. Phoenix was welcomed by many residents and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. I imagine many people heard her shrieks and giggles.

We had one - almost embarrassing - moment when mummy took Phoenix down a quiet lane to a house where the owner was stood outside his door… “Trick or Treat” says Phoenix (sounds like “twick or tweat” to me - lol) and the gentleman (as he very much proved to be) dived inside to root out some sweets… As he moved away from the door mummy spotted the “Sorry No Trick or Treaters” sign and mumbled her apologies as she accepted a treat from the kind chap! I thought it was funny but then - typical dad - I was stood back in the shadows :)

Kingsway Villagers Halloween

On our trip around the village we saw many other local children also “dressed to kill” (sic) and I managed to capture a nice collection on camera, which I completed after returning home, to play our part in supplying the local monsters with enough goodies to “keep them sweet” until Christmas!

Angelina and I wish to thank everybody for their generosity and kindness and bid you all a Happy Halloween… until next year harhararharharhar (evil laugh)!
