Street Lights
Created by ceejaytee1979I have been living in Kingsway now for 16 months, and the one major problem that has annoyed me since moving in is the street light outside our home.
Living at the end of a cul de sac the one and only street light there has never been in operation since put up, and the trouble myself and neighbours have had in order to get this rectified is unbelievable!
According to the people who have looked at it, the light has no cable connecting it and that particular part of the light is not their responsibility, and a different team need to deal with it! They come out and say that it is the responsibility of another team and round and round we go!
It is hard to understand the trouble they are having with hundreds of working lights on the estate, why the correct team cannot come out and do what should have been done in the first place.
At a cost from our own pockets we have all had to install sensor lights to help see where we are going and believe me it is pitch black. This was to benefit people parking their cars and in order to assist our neighbour houses see where they are going, with many having small children.
Does anyone have any further way forward that they can think to get this sorted along with all the other lights on the estate not working. With this and all the uneven roads around, the matter needs to be sorted before there are some serious incidents.

It took over 18 months to sort the location of my lamppost out (see here).
Not knowing exactly where you are, the advice is a bit harder, but I’m guessing your cul-de-sac is maintained by the developer and its not one of the main routes. This means it is the responsibility of the developer to get it done (as opposed to QUVL). The main thing to do is to pressure the developer. You can do this direct (as im sure you have been), however, tell everyone else about it too. Such as the parish council (Julian Powell posts on here occasionally), however I find that Jackie Hall (county Cllr) is much more effective. Also drop an email to our MP. Basically put as much pressure as you can on them and stop them cutting corners. From what I’m seeing, QUVL are basically doing their job quite well, its the developers themselves who are cutting corners and being generally rubbish, we need to ensure they do the job they promised!
Please keep this thread updated with your progress, its useful to know of peoples progress and the methods they used.

You can have the fully operational street light that is right outside my bedroom window with much pleasure!
A blind and curtains together aren’t man enough to stop the light shining right in!
Goes to show the different views people can have on the same thing doesn’t it!
That said, hope you get yours sorted soon; sounds like a royal pain.

Andy Hunter has sent me the folling info about this particular issue:
Street lighting along the main infrastructure and open spaces is all installed and working. This was confirmed by Connect Utilities on a streetlight audit. Obviously some do blow fuses/bulbs etc and we will keep monitoring this. Leeming Walk lighting was due to be installed by David Wilson Homes, however we can taken the view that as it has not been done, we will carry out the works and recharge the developers. Works to locate the streetlights starts on Monday and then we are subject to lead in time for delivery of columns. Connect are aware and will energise as soon as the columns are fixed.
If residents are concerned about lighting within their parcels, i.e. not on Woodvale, Thatcham or Valley Gardens, then they should speak to their respective developers.

We are now at 29th July 2009 and the light still has not been fixed.
Whilst the comments are to contact the developer, we are located in Shawbury Avenue, which forms part of the first phase, and is now complete.
The developers dont seem to want to know, our neighbour has complained about it and no one seems to want to take responsibility for it.
Any suggestions as to who locally I can contact about it?
The house was built by George Wimpey (based in Bristol).
It would be great to actually be able to see out of our front door at night time.

Hi ceejaytee,
Thanks for the street name.
I contacted Taylor Wimpey in Bristol.
If you call 01454 628417 (Taylor Wimpey – Customer Services – direct line) and give them your details (house number etc) they will get this issue sorted out.
They confirmed that – prior to adoption by the local Council – their local site manager will ensure that the person(s) responsible are notified and will follow up to ensure that the street light is fixed, but said that they need the name/house number of one of their customers in order to process the issue.

I too live on the phase one site of David Wilson.
I need to complain to them with photo evidence.
Does anyone have an up-to-date e-mail address for them? enquiries@dwh.co.uk does not work anymore.

Hi ceejaytee,
Glad to hear it and thanks for the update… Good luck
Hi LJA,
Yes! I rang their customer services department and the updated email address is: swestcustomerhelpline@dwh.co.uk

Hi Clive
Its been a week since I phoned the developers regarding the streetlight on Shawbury Avenue, so called them again and they came back to me within an hour to say that they have received confirmation from the firm that do the job it has been booked in, however cannot give me a date. I hope they can sort it out as by all accounts this will not be the first time this light has been looked at (they seem to be passing the buck as to which team needs to do the work on the light)
If i dont see anything happening in the next two weeks, will be back onto developers, who will chase it up.
Watch this space!

Hi ceejaytee,
Thanks for the feedback.
I added this incident to my report during the recent Kingsway Village Walkabout (just to be sure it’s reported on to the QUVL and progress is checked at some point)!
Glad to hear that it – at least – hasn’t been forgotten…
Perhaps when it’s fixed we should organise a street party to celebrate

Well here we are October 7th, 2 months since my last comment, and guess what… still hasnt been fixed!
We are at the point now where the customer care team at Taylor Wimpey are keeping the file on their desk to get this resolved. The blame apparently lies with EON (a company I already do not favour). Apparently, the lampost is not even connected to anything despite being located less than two feet away from an electrical box!
Taylor Wimpey have assured me this will be fixed within the next three weeks, we shall see!
Looks like its going to be to cold for that street party!

Hi ceejaytee1979,
Hahaha… not connected eh? That is funny… and sad… but it made me chuckle
If it’s done in time for Halloween you can combine celebrations

Well may have to resort to hanging a pumpkin from it, thats about as much use as were are going to get from it.
Will keep you posted.

Was chasing progress with Taylor Wimpey, they advised that “yes it’s all been agreed” and that they have been given the go ahed to install new columns! Columns? The light is there, it just doesn’t work!
It seems that a representative had been out and thought that there were not enough streetlights and so has instructed for more to be installed. The situation is now we have more lights in the road and they are still waiting to be connected. Taylor Wimpey advise that we are looking at another month until they are connected and this may still not include the bloody light I have been trying to get fixed for the last 4 months!
I really cannot understand the difficulty in this, I phone to get a light fixed, they install new lights, which were really needed…
The saga continues!

I’ve had some communication with PCSO Debbie Brimfield about this.
Debbie is a new addition to the Gloucester South SCT. (If I remember correctly she was previously based at Hempstead).
She has contacted Gloucestershire Highways and spoken to their “new development” contact (and been informed that the issue is not under their jurisdiction because of road adoption etc).
On 30/10 she wrote to say:
She is away (training) until November 20th.
I will update you if I hear any more.

The main point of contact I have now at Taylor Wimpey is Danny Lloyd, he is the adoptions manager for Kingsway.
I was at home Friday afternoon and noticed two Bryant Homes work vans (part of the same group) parked near the new light that’s been installed. I managed to speak to them, turned out they were working on a house ’round the corner, however the chap I spoke to was aware that there is an issue with the lights on our road. He advised that he would submit a formal note to say that he had been approached by one of residents and it will go on file.
We can only see what happens, maybe some day soon I will come home from work and be able to see in front of the house!

Amazing it only took seven months of pestering Taylor Wimpey again and again about getting the light fixed, only until I started to get really annoyed and threatened a formal complaint against them did anything really start happaning (it shouldnt have even come to that)!
Anyway we now have light outside our house (too light now, wonder if they can knock it off again)?
Right… Leaming Walk: When are they going to finish that?
Cars going up and down and turning ’round on the grass is making it look unsightly!

Hi ceejaytee,
Wow – Just in time for the spring huh?
Re: Leaming Walk: My guess is that they won’t do anything until somebody threatens a formal complaint!
