Local Swine Flu Warnings

Created by Clive

Yesterday we received a letter from Severn Vale School to announce that a student is off, having been confirmed as H1N1 (Swine Flu) positive.

The letter went on to say that he is being treated and is recovering well at home and that he is thought to have contracted the illness from an adult with no connection to the school.

They say the latest guidance from Shire Hall & health experts is to keep the school open.

Today we received a similar letter from Kingsway School informing us that there is a confirmed case of swine flu amongst the parents (NOT the pupils) & that they will monitor the situation over the coming weeks.

The NHS (UK) says:

With more than 7,400 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK, important changes have been made to the way the virus is being tackled. Read the latest official advice to help protect yourself and others.

The above quote is taken from here, where you’ll also find details about high-risk groups, actions, hygiene guidelines etc and a link to their swine flu symptoms page, where they say:

The symptoms of swine flu are broadly the same as those of ordinary flu, but may be more severe and cause more serious complications.

The typical symptoms are:

  • sudden fever, and
  • sudden cough.

Other symptoms may include:

  • headache,
  • tiredness,
  • chills,
  • aching muscles,
  • limb or joint pain,
  • diarrhoea or stomach upset,
  • sore throat,
  • runny nose,
  • sneezing, and
  • loss of appetite.

Most people who have contracted swine flu recover within a week and do not suffer complications, even without being given antiviral medication.

However, experts point out that as this is a new virus, its behaviour cannot be predicted with certainty.

They advise anyone experiencing these symptoms to use the NHS Direct swine flu symptom checker and say:

If you are then still concerned, stay at home and call your GP

Best wishes to those poor folks who are afflicted… Let’s hope the rest of us can avoid it!

My daughter had a mild version of it. We kept her off school for a week and a half and she had to have some tamiflu but by then it had almost cleared anyway. It isn’t nice to see your child that ill and the media are into scare mongering. It will clear up just like most illnesses – If you do get it keep away from those who are vulnerable.

I think the main reason behind the press coverage is that scientists do not yet know enough about this version of flu to be confident that it will act in the same way as seasonal flu. Without the knowledge of how it acts and how it may mutate, then everybody does need to be extra careful! (not panic ridden, but careful) in exactly the way that MissC says.

Ang’ called her GP today… According to him she has it :(

Best nobody visits us for a few days!

  4. Clive Says:

Six days later and she’s pretty much over it now (and going back to work tomorrow)!

The Tamiflu tab’s – combined with Paracetomols – (and LOTS of sleep – lol) seem to have done the trick and… touch wood… nobody else seems to have caught it, (we were most worried for Phoenix of course)!

Hope you’re all keeping bug-free
