Local Elections

Created by Barry Kirby

Given that the Local Council are up for election soon, I thought a discussion on here would be useful to inform peoples opinions and share any knowledge we have that would be useful.

Also to encourage people to actually vote, as I can’t help thinking that this election is important, not only for us, but to send our message to Westminster!

On this page are the nominees for our area.

It seems we can elect 2 out of 8.
At the last one, both Conservative and Labour were elected.
I can honestly say I have only seen one of those and know who she is and has taken an interest in my issues.

But what do other people think?

    Hi Baz,

Interesting reading the election leaflets, my overriding impression was that (as usual) the focus is more on “what they will do wrong” rather than “what we will do right”!

There’s more controversy about the incinerator issue which I looked at back in 2007 (along with lots of information and help from Jackie Hall, and a lot of online information). Suffice to say that things have moved on a lot since I wrote that post, but the issue was – and still is – extremely complex.
I’m not sure that “shelving the whole thing” is any sort of long-term answer (‘though it would suit both those who’d rather it wasn’t built at all, and those who just wish it was built elsewhere)!

Re: The election itself – In light of recent events it is perhaps understandable that I have little enthusiasm for politics of any sort right now, and I must confess that I haven’t fully made up my mind yet, (sadly the leaflets didn’t help too much with that; all in all, I would much prefer a more positive approach to election campaigning), but I am inclined to vote in favour of the only party represented by the only politician to have given me any direct practical help and assistance in past years (same person who helped you)!

    Hi Baz,
There are actually two Tory candidates standing and a vote for either one will be a vote for a giant incinerator being dumped on the doorstep of Kingsway. I hope this has cleared it up for you.
I cannot recall a local election being dominated by one issue as much as this one has. The residents need to send a clear message to the County Council that Kingsway will not become a dumping ground for their incinerator. Residents of all political backgrounds are against this giant incinerator.
    Make your vote count.

    Hi Mr Shute,

Thanks for joining and contributing :)

Javelin Park is the site (purchased as part of the requirements set by central governement in order to receive the £92 million funding for waste disposal); I’d hardly call that “on the doorstep of Kingsway”.
More importantly, the decision has not yet been made (and won’t be made for another 2 years). If a better alternative can be found, the incinerator will not be built (and there’s no guarantee that Javelin Park will be used).

You use the phrase “I cannot recall a local election being dominated by one issue as much as this one has”… which sounds very familiar (I’m sure I’ve seen that exact same phrase in several places recently)! Strangely though – when I talk to friends and neighbours – the incinerator isn’t anywhere near the top of their list of issues! Most of the folks I’ve spoken to are still influenced by the recent expenses fiasco and others are more interested in roads and parking, local amenities, crime and ASB etc.

    Hi Mr Shute

To be honest, I do not have a problem with the incinerator issue, as I believe – as Clive has pointed out – there are a number of issues around it, also the technology involved is quite good. I do not believe in this NIMBY attitude, however if you can give me a factual reason… unfortunately I do not believe that any of the parties are being very good in this respect.

I’m more interested in people who do things for us. In that respect Jackie Hall has been very good to Kingsway and that makes one decision very easy. As for the other, I will decide in the next 20 mins, though it won’t be Labour.

Anyway, whoever you want to vote for is up to you, but PLEASE VOTE, without it, this country will go to the dogs even more; we need to get a grip on it.
