Car Keyed on Driveway

Created by Martin_Holmes

Just a warning for people to keep an eye on their cars.

Last night I had my car keyed whilst it was sat on my driveway, I’ve been left with a nice deep scratch right down to the metal that’s about a metre long.

Since I moved here 2 and a half years ago I’ve had a brick smashed against my car window, valve caps stolen and my tyres deflated and now this. I don’t really know anyone that lives here rather than my direct neighbours so these are obviously random acts of vandalism and I’m sick of it now.

Reading the various comments on here there does still seem to be a bit of an issue here with bikes being stolen, tyres slashed and even muggings on the footpaths and what not, it’s just not funny anymore.

    Morning,

We recognise the serious concerns you’re encountering too… Perhaps you may feel it’s time for you too consider CCTV for your driveway. We have done this surrounding our property and the major concerns have decreased considerably. We feel it was money well spent because we can prove via recordings who causes the damage.

Hopefully your concerns will equally decrease if you decide the same too. We need to help ourselves by taking this action so we can provide The Police with the much needed evidence for their chance of a better outcome for our community.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you’re told by people that Kingsway is peaceful place to live but you still need CCTV on your own property.

The problems indicated happen up & down the country sadly – not just here, at least ours are in their limited numbers thankfully. Regardless, it’s better to do something about the problem before it gets any worse rather than simply stick your head in the sand and hope it goes away on it’s own or shout/blame the police who offer support and advice by suggesting how you can protect your property and at the same time possibly assist them too with the evidence needed!

The difference in making the suggestion I have was purely in preventing such problems from continuing or getting any worse. Surely, you would prefer doing something about the problem before you suffer even further dramatic damage/theft rather than doing nothing so the outside looks pretty but you leave yourself vulnerable yet again. The suggestion offers you some comfort knowing you can provide supportive evidence for those causing the problem to be addressed quickly so it’s stops – plus the cctv isn’t the same as that attached to offices or high streets for addressing similar problems. The cameras can be very small with the technology of today. Therefore, not unsightly of easily viewable for doubtful concern of their need – beyond reducing your house insurance costs if you have something like this added onto your alarm system!

I fully agree with blastu2. Fifty or so years ago, homes did not have alarms on them and people could leave their doors unlocked all day. Times have changed house alarms are everywhere does a bright yellow box with a flashing light on it stop the criminal element from scratching your car or vandalising your garden? I am sure a night vision camera or three would make them think twice.
I fitted CCTV to my last home when these things were very expensive and brought them with me to this home four years ago. I can honestly say that in the ten years I have been using them there has been zero problems on our property. These cameras also helped to stop the vandals from throwing for sale signs into the pond. I did however have problems when I first moved in and had not fitted them up yet. However, nothing since they went up. I think that speaks for itself.
Street lighting around Kingsway is not that great at the moment but I am sure a 24-hour a day infrared eye watching your property will keep the vandals away.
Kingsway is a peaceful place to live much like the village of Randwick where I am from and almost every house in Randwick now has an alarm flashing away on it’s wall. I am not comparing Kingsway with Randwick as Randwick is tiny and has been around for centuries; the fact still remains that even the homes in tiny sleepy villages have home security measures fitted.
Heck I even watched Balamory with my 2 year old this morning and they have alarms on them too. Sorry darrjeff but protecting our homes as best we can is not a sign that Kingsway has problems but more a sign that the country as a whole has changed and we all need to do what we can to make life easier for us and harder for the criminals. This cannot be seen as a bad thing surely.

This type of crime is outrageous, and I am surprised at the laid back attitude of some residents towards it all. I don’t believe this type of crime often happens all over the country, certainly not as often as seems to be reported in Kingsway. The idea that we should all install CCTV onto our homes is quite extreme. Yes plenty of homes have security alarms fitted, mine included, but this shouldn’t be an assumption that risk of crime is in every neighbourhood! Bikes stolen from gardens? Cars keyed on private driveways? Property thrown into ponds? This is just not acceptable. It is my view that this type of spiteful crime is carried out by the type of ‘humans’ that have not been brought up to respect their neighbours, fuelled by their jealousy towards those who go out to work to earn a living, towards those who are able to pay for their possessions. If these type of criminals cannot respect the way we live, then why on earth should we accept them into the housing that is on our doorsteps?

    Hi poppy,

I don’t believe this type of crime often happens all over the country, certainly not as often as seems to be reported in Kingsway.

And yet crime stat’s for Kingsway show that rates of crime are lower here than in most surrounding areas.

  7. darrjeff Says:

I do get annoyed that we have to fit alarms or CCTV and just treat theft from our gardens or shed as normal everyday living. Why should we accept that! The people doing this petty crime are dragging down Kingsway.

  8. MS PC Repairs Says:

I have to agree with poppy there are many people moving into Kingsway who do not respect their neighbours and do not respect the neighbourhood as a whole. I just need to take a look around at how much rubbish collects in places that use to be tidy landscaped areas. And the play equipment being slowly carved away with the graffiti on them. I have a young daughter who plays in the park I wonder what four letter words she will learn to read while playing.
To damage someone’s property be it a plant pot or a car is wrong and the people who commit these crimes are the dregs of society. I would like to say however that I know of some criminal activity that took place in Kingsway, which involved teenagers from outside of Kingsway altogether. Therefore, to lay all the blame for these criminal acts on just residents in Kingsway would be unjustified. When I grew up our village newspaper often had reports of phone boxes being vandalised and the money boxes stolen. The way we receive our local news has changed and just because these things appear on this site for all to read does not make Kingsway any worse than anywhere else.

Having your car keyed as they call it is very damaging this is not just a scratch that can be rubbed out it is a full on body shop repair which is extremely expensive. So there is no laid back attitude from me regarding this awful behaviour and it should be met with tougher measures within the law rather than a slap on the wrist and don’t do it again attitude taken by the courts. But cars being scratched on purpose is indeed very common be it at your home or just in a car park so to say this behaviour is limited to one place :?:
However, this is the society we live in and the criminals know they will get no punishment if caught. Therefore, they continue to make people’s lives a misery in the name of fun or just out of jealousy. They are cowards and would not behave in such a way if someone were watching them this is the only reason for the suggestion of CCTV.
We are all guilty of ignoring that car alarm or house alarm that keeps going off so what use are they really?

If more people reported bad behaviour and kept a watch on our neighbours things would be much better I am sure.
These criminals hide in the shadows they skulk about in the dark and creep around like animals but they soon run when a door opens or a light goes on. They are not to be feared they should be punished more severely for their crimes.
As a parent of teenagers, I know that if my kids were doing this they would be more scared of what I would do to them that anything the law would do. In addition, I believe this is where as parents we should all mould our children into respectful human beings. Because the swine who have been doing these things to Mr Holmes are somebody’s children. How proud their parents must be of what they have brought up.
And of course, if this is being done by adults and not kids then good long looks at their lives is needed or perhaps just try and get one. (A life that is).

    MS-PC,

I agree… and you make some very good points.

For myself, I wish the whole village (and City) was covered by CCTV.

    Good Afternoon All,

I would like to defend my own suggestion of CCTV understanding this is what I had installed because of repeated concerns being caused to my property. We have within the past 72 hours – begun preparing our front garden in readiness of; The Queen’s Golden Jubilee & Kingsway, a village in bloom!

Sadly, late afternoon yesterday – two female children already known for previous ASB of this kind when damaging our garden – decided they could walk-up the steps to my front entrance and damage the large potted plant display by pulling-off flowering arms and throwing them into the road for their enjoyment as they both ran-off. The comfort in knowing I could prove what they had done has been captured from my CCTV system and I will be forwarded this for police attention.

I hope this confirms why such a system can be shown as a positive form of addressing this continued behaviour!

  11. G Note Says:

CCTV today is a MUST, and to be fair the need is not a modern problem, but is a modern solution to a time old problem. Crime has always been and will always be with us :o (.

If anyone needs any suggestions on CCTV I couldn’t recommend Y-Cam IP Cameras enough, they are pretty inexpensive and offer recording to an onboard miniSD card, they connect to your broadband so you can access the images remotely and have accessories such as an external housing.

We could spend all day running Kingsway into the ground, but I can assure you, this problem is present everywhere and is not unique to Kingsway.
