A38 Roadworks

Thursday, June 28th, 2012 by Paul

Hi All,

Over the weekend we had a letter posted through our door from Gloucestershire Highways. They are going to be undertaking works on the A38 to resurface the northbound carriageway from the Waterwells roundabout to Cole Avenue. I’m sure many of you will agree that it’s about time, this section of the road is very poor in comparison to the southbound carriageway, and any traffic driving on it generates a lot of noise disturbing residents on both sides of the A38.

They say that they are aiming to carry out the work on Sundays and nights. They are starting on Sunday 8th July at 8am, and will work until 11pm. They will then work nights Monday – Friday from 7pm – 6am, planning to complete the works on Sunday 15th July.  The road will be open outside of these hours when traffic will be controlled using lane closures.

They go on to talk about the noise that these roadworks will cause, with the noisiest work (eg using rotary planers, saw cutters and hand breakers) being carried out on the Sunday and in the evenings until 11pm. “Operations between 11pm and 6am will be undertaken as quietly as possible, but residents should be aware that there will still be noise associated with the works during this period. However every effort will be made to keep this to an absolute minimum.”

Any queries should be directed to Gloucestershire Highways on 08000 514514

Lets hope we can all get some sleep that week!

Travellers in Kingsway

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 by Paul

Well I’m fairly surprised it has taken this long, given the amount of large green space there is in Kingsway, but travellers have finally set themselves a pitch at the entrance to the village.

They’ve set up camp behind the flags, but I couldn’t see whether they were behind the fence or not.

They weren’t there when we popped out at 6:30 but when we got back just before 11pm there are plenty of caravans. It struck me as odd the fact that there were loads of parked cars next to the Woodvale blockade when we went out.

Who’s responsibility is it to move these people on: QUVL or Gloucester Council?

Kingsway Truck Stop

Am I the only one who is getting fed up seeing lorries parked in the blocked off road, next to the roundabout, most evenings when we enter the village?

Call me overly concerned, but I feel that having lorries parked up, potentially full of goods can only attract the criminal element to Kingsway. This is certainly a reputation that the RA is trying to get rid of.

It won’t take too long for the undesirables to spot these vehicles being left on a regular basis.  I also don’t think it was the replacement ornament to the roundabout we were looking for to welcome people to the village.

I’m guessing the driver is a local resident, who possibly gets up early to go out delivering.  As someone who is not the best at crawling out of bed in the morning I fully appreciate that every extra minute in my nice warm bed counts.  However what started as one lorry has this evening turned in to two.

If that then wasn’t enough it seems to have attracted a rather shabby looking van that seems to have been abandoned on the grass, which is being used for a local garage to advertise their wares.

Does anyone know if QUVL can do anything to stop the advertising at the very least, if not politely ask the lorry driver(s) to move on?

This isn’t meant to be a personal attack on the driver(s) of the lorries, as an ex-driver myself I know how difficult it is to find a quiet and safe spot to stop.  I’m just not sure that Kingsway is the most appropriate place.

Fooling With Fireworks

Friday, October 31st, 2008 by Paul

Last night on my way home through the underpass from Tesco’s, I spotted a group of youths setting off fireworks on the embankment. This was only a couple of metres from the A38 and not far from peoples houses. The group did not look old enough to buy fireworks from any store (legally anyway), so I can only imagine where they obtained them.

Any parent would be horrified to find that their son or daughter had been injured by a rogue firework. This is the time of year to remind all youngsters whatever their age of the firework code and the dangers of letting them off so close to people and traffic.
I also think that the shops need to be reminded of the age limits on buying fireworks by local Police.

I’m not a scrooge, and I like many others enjoy fireworks at this time of year and can even tolerate them going off most evenings while people are enjoying themselves. I do however believe that parents have a responsibility to themselves and their children to make sure that they understand the dangers.

I am equally worried about this happening this weekend with youngsters out Trick or Treating, as that is a headline I don’t want to see in the local Press.
