New Resident

Monday, June 13th, 2011 by Jack

Hi,

I’m not actually a Kingsway resident yet so I hope I’m allowed to post here! It is very likely that my girlfriend and I are about to buy our first house in Kingsway. We’ve reserved a plot and we have a mortgage offer and we should be in a position to exchange within the next week or so.

We have had various surveys carried out and one issue has arisen. The environmental survey has concluded that the plot is near an old landfill site. I have followed the reports advice and contacted Gloucester City Council’s Contaminated Land Officer and he has informed me that the landfill is no longer considered a concern due to the remediation work that has previously been carried out. I’m not particularly concerned by the reports findings as I don’t think planning permission would have been granted without the necessary remediation work being carried out first, but I was just wondering if anyone else had similar concerns raised before they moved to Kingsway and whether anyone has any additional information regarding what kind of waste was land filled and what the remediation process entailed?

I have followed this blog over the last few months or so and it has been really useful. I appreciate I may be opening a rather large can of worms here, but is there anything else that anyone thinks would be particularly useful for a new resident to know? I’m especially interested in finding out how bad the traffic gets during the rush hour, and what things are like for cyclists. I know amenities in Kingsway are rather limited at the moment and I don’t want to give anyone free advertising but are there any independent restaurants, pub’s, greengrocers or butchers around Gloucester that anyone can recommend? Finally our home is being built by Persimmon. Has anyone else bought a Persimmon house? What were they like at fixing snags as they have a pretty bad reputation nationally?

Thanks
Jack

Kingsway Living

I find it rather frustrating  that whoever is in charge of the development/maintenance of Kingsway doesn’t seem to accept the responsibility for the village.  How can a whole new village be built if it’s not going to be maintained?  The roads are awful, access is limited and amenities non existent!  OK, shops are going up and there is a Pharmacy and Childrens Centre, but what about the real needs of people? IE: Doctors, Community Pride Days?

I think that one of the reasons Kingsway is tarred with the anti-social behaviour tag appears to be that Homeowners/Tenants are put here with little resources and very little input from Housing Associations and GCC, leaving everyone with very little to do. Maybe as residents of Kingsway we should look at getting villagers together and pulling our weight by perhaps tidying the area around us? Taking pride in our village! This could also enhance community spirit! It might even give us some good press!

I  personally feel the fact that The Developers seem to be using every scrap of land available begs the question where is the room for the multi sports pitch, a new community centre, a pub? Does every scrap of land need to be used? They can’t fill the properties they are already building but still continue to do so!  I have been a Kingsway resident since 2008 and down to the building within Brize Avenue, the roads and pavements have been so bad it has destroyed the use of the wheels on my double buggy!

Shouldn’t the developers have sorted the amemities first before putting a whole community of people in? it would have made sense! Up until recently, it seems pathetic that I have had to walk for a good 45 mins to a shop be it Tesco/Tuffley just to by a pint of milk or a paper!

Ok rant over! I don’t hate living in Kingsway but believe it was poorly planned and find the whole thing frustrating! I would take the time to attend such things as pride days – even  children can get involved and  learn to take care of their environment……that way Kingsway may become a little more appreciated.

Lorries in Thatcham Avenue

Monday, June 6th, 2011 by tog

Every day we are plagued by large lorries using Thatcham Avenue. Are the drivers of these vehicles illiterate or Blind? Can they not see the large signs at the entrance to Kingsway stating clearly NO CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC, or have they been advised by the owners of the vehicles to take no notice of the residents who live here, as they are powerless to stop you using the road?

I have sent photos and countless e-mails to the QUVL and they have not had the courtesy or decency to reply to me; what a waste of space they are as an organisation. Their motto should read "we have had your money, now you are on your own".

Every time these large lorries go past our property the whole house vibrates. We have already had one of our front window sills replaced at quite a cost, perhaps if I had sent the bill to QUVL they might respond to me, but then I might be waiting a couple of years for them to reply?

One very fed up home owner on this estate.
