Car Club for Kingsway

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 by Amanda

Hi,

I’m trying to gauge interest in a car club for Kingsway. This would be a car, with its own marked bay in the village centre, which could be booked for use by the hour, by people in Kingsway.

Many of the questions about car club costs etc can be found on the Commonwheels website.

We, as a family, are about to give up our own car (by choice), and are researching into alternative, and hopefully cheaper, transport options.

Please be aware that Gloucestershire County Council are currently conducting a review into their current bus services in order to reduce their budget. This will involve cuts to the existing No 14 bus, primarily the evening service.
Please complete the review for the bus services that matter to you, so your views can be represented! This Thursday 2nd June 7PM at Gloucester Guildhall, there is a chance to have your say about the review, and again at Eastgate Mall on Saturday, 10am-2pm.

I would love to hear your views on the car club though!

Thanks.

Residents Association – Vacancies

Thursday, May 19th, 2011 by Clive

Recently, two of our Residents Association committee members have resigned due to personal commitments, leaving us a little short-handed.

In addition, the early resignation of another member left us one short, so we could also use one (or more) additional “General” Committee Members to help “lighten the load”.

Consequently we have need of volunteers to fill the following posts:

  • Secretary
  • Press Secretary
  • General Member(s)

The roles are not too demanding, the Secretary is responsible for preparing meeting minutes and the Press Secretary generally prepares a monthly article for the Quedgeley News and other local media. The “General Member(s)” would simply help lighten the load for the rest of us by getting involved in dealing with local problems and assisting in organising local events.

The Committee meets one evening per month (normally at a local address), and once a quarter for public meetings, and several of us attend other local meetings and events, (‘though these are – obviously – voluntary).

No experience is necessary and there are no age limits (either way), so – if you have a little time to spare and would like to help your local community, please post here, contact Barry Kirby (or any comittee member) directly, or ask at our next Public Meeting (31st May).

Charity Bags

Thursday, May 19th, 2011 by blastu2

I know this has been commented on before recently but this is increasingly becoming more of an issue lately. We have noticed more and more Charity Bags appearing through our letterbox each week – sometimes three a week! The person who delivers these bags is usually the same man, and regardless of the number he continues to deliver – whichever one’s are used (understanding they all can’t be from the amount we keep getting each week) they never appear to collect them!

I accept, and completely understand the difficulties charities are facing right now – just as the rest of us are thanks to the massive conservative/liberal cutbacks. The amount is overwhelming, and the disregard for their collection thereafter simply frustrates those who pick one of the many constantly pushed through our letterboxes. I telephoned the council, and yes you guessed it… nothing to do with us so not our problem! I telephoned “Children our Future” via their representatives UNICARE as those who have their bags delivered more often than most (01132 493008) and asked for this constant bombardment too be addressed. We received one of their bags on Monday, only to receive another bag this morning from the same person who delivered the previous one – and between these are all the others who equally have theirs delivered too!

Road from Naas Lane to new Tesco

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011 by CandG

Does anyone know when this road will be officially open? There have been lots of cars (myself included) using this road more frequently for quicker/easier access to the M5, however I noticed yesterday that there are now large signs at Naas Lane and near the new Tesco stating that it is for contruction traffic only.

If some of the contruction traffic feel it’s ok to come in to Kingsway via Thatcham Ave why can’t we use the other road?

A taxi driver from Gloucester told me he thought it was only going to be used by buses (I think he might have this confused with the road coming past Avionics House up to the roundabout onto Halton Way/Woodvale).

Will there also be a bus route that goes along from the new Tesco, past the primary school and on to Valley Gdns? Will this also have a bollard to prevent cars from going along there?

Kingsway Large Park

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 by @thatcham

Once again the park is a disgrace and currently unsafe for the children for whom it is intended to be able to play; the floor is strewn with broken glass.

It continues to astound me as to how inconsiderate youths that frequent the park can be.

Does anyone know who should be contacted in order for this mess to be cleaned up?

Does anyone think that extra bins (currently two already in the park) may encourage them to use the facility?

Two of Kingsway’s Favourite Subjects

Yes…

Parking and The Underpass.

A few days ago, while walking under the underpass, I witnessed a car coming down Valley Gardens towards Matalan. As it approached the underpass, it sped up considerably, as if travelling at speed might allow it to avoid the CCTV. I hope it didn’t. Reckless and dangerous are two words I can think of to describe the driver’s attitude. But a £60 fine at most? If there really is a good reason why this road isn’t open as a general thoroughfare, which I take it there must be, then why aren’t the fines much higher? Are any figures available to show how many people have been caught driving through the underpass? Are they published / made public anywhere to act as a deterrent? A driver thinking they could get away with speeding through the underpass could put a child’s life at risk.

Meanwhile… I’ve also seen a few people parking on the double yellow lines next to the children’s play area on Valley Gardens recently, while they take their children into the play area. It’s good that they take the time to supervise their children; not so good that they effectively block one half of the road, turning it into an obstacle course. Another sign of the “I’m alright Jack” culture that seems to be spreading throughout the area?
