Kingsway Children’s Centre

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 by jpietruszewski

Hi all,

I have just been reading your posts on here with regard to ‘what to do with your toddlers’…

We are a SureStart Children’s Centre based at Kingsway. We are currently running from a classroom in the School, while our actual centre is being built (on the school site).
We are hoping to be open in Jan 2011.

In the meantime we run a Stay & Play session which is a drop in session for 0-4 year olds and their parents/carers every Thursday from 1.30pm – 3pm.

The cost of the Stay & Play session is £2.00 per family. This includes a drink and snack for your child.

This  group is supported by Community Family Workers who are on hand for advice and support (if required).

Why not come along and meet new friends and have fun!

We also support  a Kingsway Health/Baby Clinic, on a Thursday morning from 9.15am – 11am where you can have your baby weighed, breast feeding support/advice where a Health Visitor Nursery Nurse is on hand for advice and support.

Sessions are open this Thursday and ongoing.

Please contact Jodie or Debby for more information if required on 01452 526856.

Hope to see you all there and hope the above has helped with ‘what to do with your toddlers’  – obviously when we open the Centre in Jan 2011 we will have a more extensive programme to offer.

Kind Regards
Jodie

Have Your Say Day

Friday, August 27th, 2010 by Clive

As mentioned in my post following the RA Meeting – 20/08/’10 (penultimate paragraph), details of the forthcoming Have Your Say Day are as follows:

The Safer Gloucester Partnership are to hold a “Have Your Say” Day in Thatcham Avenue, Kingsway on Saturday 11th September to ask residents their views of life in the area and if it is affected by crime or other issues.

This is a multi-agency event and there will be staff from Gloucester City Council, Police, Councillors, Housing Associations as well as volunteers from Neighbourhood Watch and the Crime Prevention Panel.

If any resident is interested in helping with this event, please telephone Pat Dabbs at Gloucester City Council on 01452 396984 before Monday 6th September.

We are meeting at Kingsway Primary School on Valley Gardens at 9.45 am and will be able to park our cars there.

We will have a briefing and hope to be out knocking on doors and talking to people at 10.00am.

We work in pairs – no one ever calls at a property alone and we do not enter into properties – all discussions take place on the doorstep.

We will return to the school for 12.30 where we will provide lunch.

Hopefully, we may complete the exercise in the morning (dependant on numbers of volunteers), but if not, anyone who is available will go out again in the afternoon.

We are going to cover all the properties in Thatcham Avenue.

RA Meeting – 20/08/’10

Monday, August 23rd, 2010 by Clive

The Kingsway Residents Association Public Meeting was attended by around 40 people and chaired by Barry Kirby (RA Chairman).

The official minutes will be added to the site (on the RA Home Page) as soon as possible (Note 07/09/’10: Meeting Minutes – 20/08/’10 now added); meanwhile these are my notes:

Apologies were received from Andy Smith (QUVL) who was away on holiday.

Barry gave details of a proposal to reduce accidents on the A38 junction with Kingsway by adding speed cameras and a imposing a 40MPH speed limit on the A38 itself, 300 yards either side of the junction.

Re: The Woodvale Blockades: The QUVL had previously proposed removing the earthworks and adding gates to be opened when the A38 is blocked but have now decided to pursue early adoption by The Council (following adoption they could opened permanently).

Barry circulated the proposed Residents Association Constitution (now adopted and available here) and we discussed the forthcoming Residents Association Committee Elections (November ’10); all residents are encouraged to consider volunteering for a post. I don’t have an electronic copy of the document available right now but will add it to the RA Home Page shortly.

Our guest speaker this month was Cllr Fred Wood.
Cllr Wood started with a potted personal history outlining his extensive military career, his connections with Gloucester and Quedgeley and his interest in Kingsway Village.

Cllr Wood touched on the subject of Adoption, stating that all concerned parties are pursuing adoption ASAP.
Regarding problems in the park(s), the complaints procedure is via the QUVL, and Cllr Wood recommends that you should also approach the City Council and should let him know too; he will pursue on your behalf.

On the topic of Amenities Cllr Wood said that construction is (once again) scheduled to commence in September this year and is expected to take 12 months. Tesco Express will be opening a shop and there will be several other shops and – of course – the Pub’.

Cllr Wood also raised the subject of Behaviour of Local Constructors, stating that the Council have (successfully) prosecuted one company and are using that example to “encourage” others to obey the rules.
He also mentioned a “HereToHelp Website” but I am unable to find any such website related to local issues (I probably made an error in my notes)

On the subject of ASB Cllr Woods mentioned that Glos’ City Homes are commencing a local anti-ASB initiative nicknamed Project Solace and that Kingsway will be one of the first areas to benefit from the initiative.
Kingsway has an ASB taskforce which began it’s activities today – 20/08 (hence the large Police presence on Woodvale this evening), will involve Police and Social Housing Agencies (plus other “Key Players”) and will include a “Have Your Say” event to gather information and distribute help and advice to local residents on September 11th… (See linked post for details).

Cllr Wood concluded his contribution by quoting his contact details:
Telephone: 07939 760140
Email: frederick.wood@gloucester.gov.uk

The meeting wound up shortly after 2110 hrs.

Garden Thefts and Late Night Prowlers

Friday, August 20th, 2010 by mitzi1960

I have been here now for 4 months. In this time I have had two Gnomes taken from my front doorstep and last night I had a big white planter taken from my front garden.

The sad thing about this, is that a lady of 101 years old gave this plant to my son 2 years ago and he has looked after this plant and named it after her.
He is very upset and wants it back.

I can’t afford to keep replacing items to make my garden look nice, but what is scary, is that I am being woken up hearing people in my garden or in neighbour’s gardens very late at night or in the early hours of the morning.

As I live on my own with my son, I don’t want to confront them for fear of repercussions, but I don’t want to be scared of going to bed and living in my home!

It’s a shame that these houses have no gates on the front gardens, if they did we could lock them.

So what the advice? Who do you turn to?

Table Top Sale?

Sunday, August 15th, 2010 by mitzi1960

Many residents near Prestwick Rd / Marham Drive would like to hold a table top sale on the green area between them.

As this area is used mostly by dog walkers and a few children on their bikes, we wouldn’t disturb road users, but we would like to know who to contact and whether premmission could be gained?

I know many would say go to a car boot sale, but many residents do not drive. But it would be a great idea to recycle items that may benefit others, and between us we would clean up the area if we were allowed to hold one.
